My best guess is that Nintendo did not think it fair that other companies were profiting from their content without an adequate, formal business relationship. Current Nintendo guidelines for individual content creators still apply, and are quite permissive. It applies only to entertainment companies that create content from Nintendo's products. Please do note that this change is not for individual, independent creators. no content past certain point in the game)

It is their creation after all, so they should be free to impose regulations on the distribution of their content - particularly to ensure that the stream/video will indeed work as advertisement and not a replacement (i.e. Game developers imposing rules on streaming content shouldn't be seen as strange: Nintendo has instituted and changed theirs a couple of times in the past, while other companies institute their own (Sony and Atlus come to mind right away). Any other company would be thrilled at the free marketing from streamers highlighting their games.Įxcept, in many cases, the free marketing is also mixed up with potential loss of sales - particularly for longer, newer games, streamed from start to finish. I don’t understand this new policy from Nintendo at all.
